Kamaran

On 12 June 2014, my friend the Iraqi Kurdish photojournalist Kamaran Najm was kidnapped by Islamic State. He has not been heard from since. On this page I want to showcase his work, post some pictures, and celebrate him in my own humble way.

While this page is under construction, please listen to Sebastian Meyer’s 2-part NPR series about Kamaran, released on the fifth anniversary of his disappearance in June 2019.

Sebastian has also written a number of extremely powerful articles about Kamaran. To read these, and see his beautiful pictures, go to his website, sebmeyer.com/news or his Instagram, @sebmeyerphoto.

In August 2019 I wrote an article for Al-Monitor on Kamaran’s legacy at Metrography – the photo agency he co-founded with Sebastian – and his brother Ahmed’s work to keep it going.
